CHEMI
The "Roof of the World" The highest place on earth!
Geography
Located in the Qinghai-Tibet
plateau, Tibet is the highest region in the world. In an
area of about 2.5 million square kilometers, the Tibetan
Plateau includes spiky snow-laden mountains, stunning
aqua/aquamarine lakes, foaming yellow rivers, lush tropical
forests, sea-green grasslands and dry arid sand dunes, land
as dry as a ancient bone.
The
Himalayan mountain range has table-lands averaging over
4.950 meters above sea level with peaks of 6,000 to 7500
meters. Mt. Everest at 29,028 feet is the highest mountain
in the world. North Base Camp, located on the Tibet side of
the mountain stands at 17.090 feet, quite a breathless
experience in more ways that one! Time for
acclimatization is very
important to the health and safety of all visitors,
especially climbers. The average altitude in Tibet is around
3000 meters in the south areas and 4500 in the northern
areas.
Why So High?
The Pacific Crustal Plate Slipped Under Asia
Using a new technique of
seismic exploration, the geophysicists said they discovered
400 miles under the Asian continent huge slabs that were
once part of the earth's crust. The slabs appeared to be
remnants of the Pacific crustal plate that slipped under the
Asian continent.

"In the
Clouds"
Anyone who has
ever been to the Tibetan high plateau is astounded by the
breathtaking cloud formations, The millions of droplets or
crystals that form clouds seemed to be formed differently in
Tibet.
Is
that right? Well, the mere fact that you are sitting at the
highest point on earth might mean you are so much closer to
the clouds that you can simply make them out better. Driving
over mountain range after mountain range gives the tourist
an opportunity to see clouds and cloud formations they have
never seen before. People often spend hours just studying or
talking about the clouds overhead or beyond a peak and that
doesn't even include how inspiring the sunrises and sunsets
are with all those unusually fluffy clouds! Some
photographers go to Tibet exclusively to film clouds.
There's no place better!
